Crashes and the grey alt-tab screen

A grey screen after alt-tab is a display-mode problem, not the same bug as an fps drop. On the 2011 PC build, PCGamingWiki’s borderless flag is `Borderless = true` inside display.ini. The shaky 120fps cap is a second crash suspect. Verify files and update the GPU driver before you add mods.

Borderless window

Exclusive fullscreen is what alt-tab fights. Borderless windowed avoids that device reset. The 2011 note is specific: add Borderless = true to display.ini. Remastered’s menu may already expose a borderless option; I am not quoting a menu label I did not see on a store page, so the file edit I will cite is the original-game one.

MixFix is optional here. It is documented for the cap and for audio, and people use it when the cap itself crashes the process. It is not a crash logger. I have no tally of crash dumps, so I will not name a single “most common” faulting module.

Order of operations

First, borderless. Second, let the store verify the game files. Third, update the graphics driver. Fourth, remove newly added mods, because a loose file from the 2011 tool chain can take down Remastered. Only then consider MixFix.

FAQ

Why is the screen grey after alt-tab?

The documented response on the 2011 build is borderless windowed, via Borderless = true in display.ini.

Does the fps cap crash the game?

PCGamingWiki lists the poor 120fps cap as a crash risk. It is one suspect, not the only one.
